Omegle alternative
Omegle alternatives — where to chat with strangers now
Omegle shut down in November 2023, and millions of people are still looking for somewhere to talk to someone new. Hollr is a free, anonymous alternative built around text: you can see who is online, choose who to message, and keep the conversation private.
Why Omegle closed
After years of moderation problems and legal pressure, Omegle's founder shut the site down in 2023. The pairing idea was great; the unmoderated video side was what ended it.
How Hollr is different
Hollr is text-first. There is no camera roulette, so you never get shown something you didn't ask for. You browse a list of real people who are online and pick who to say hello to.
You still get randomness
Prefer not to choose? Tap Surprise me and Hollr opens a private chat with a random person who matches your filters — the part of Omegle people actually miss.
Anonymous, but safer
A nickname is all anyone sees. Messages are scanned for scams and abuse, you can block anyone in one tap, and everyone has to confirm they are 18+.
No sign up, no download
Open the site, pick a nickname, and you're chatting. There's an optional free account if you want your chats on every device.
Works on your phone
Hollr is built for a phone in one hand — no app store, no install, just your browser.
Questions people ask
- Is Omegle coming back?
- No. The site was permanently shut down in November 2023 and the domain now shows a farewell letter from its founder.
- What is the closest thing to Omegle?
- For text chat with strangers, Hollr is very close: random pairing, anonymous nicknames and no registration — but with a people list so you can choose, and moderation to keep it civil.
- Are Omegle alternatives free?
- Hollr is completely free. No account, no subscription and no paid features.
- Is there video chat?
- Not on Hollr. We deliberately stick to text, photos and short voice notes — it's the part of stranger chat that stays friendly.
